Conductor
Now, what do we do about this--
Story Orleans.png
Orleans
"Monsieur Conductor, as you feared, we are running out of medical supplies. I have treated those who have life-threatening injuries for the time being. I'm also using my healing magic, but with so many wounded..."
Story Vivienne.png
Vivienne
"We have also distributed all the food we brought."
Story Vivienne.png
Vivienne
"And I checked the their remaining supplies, everything is empty. Well, even if there was any ammunition left, none of the soldiers could use it."
I paused for thought from the current reports that kept coming in one after another.
When we finally arrived at the forward base, it was pure chaos. Most of the soldiers were wounded and there was nobody who looked like they could fight. There are also several who have not returned from their deployment.
Story Vivienne.png
Vivienne
"And this is really our forward base? I don't think we can maintain a front line with this..."
Conductor
Vivienne was right. This is not really a forward base, it's just wooden buildings and trenches surrounded by a wooden fence. In addition, the supplies are on the verge of depletion.
Conductor
There is an option of mobilising all Train Knights and cutting through a supply line by force...
Story Rouen.png
Rouen
"That strategy might be a bit tough. Mist is starting to build up around the base. There are a lot of Mist Monsters around likely because of this."
Story Rouen.png
Rouen
"I don't really want to think about it, but... we might be trapped here."
Story Vivienne.png
Vivienne
"The request from HQ was to stay at the forward base until the supply lines were restored and pick up the battle situation... right? I will fight if Conductor wants us to. But..."
Conductor
We don't know when the Mist will lift. If we engage into battle to secure the supply lines, there will be no one left to defend this base.
Story Paddington.png
Paddington
"Um... the soldiers would like to have a word with you, Conductor."
Paddington presented to us the soldiers guarding the fort while she was distributing water and food to the wounded soldiers. The following was what the men in charge of this base had to say.
--We are soldiers. We can't abandon the base.
--We can't even move to begin with.
--We want the SSS to return alone and pass this information on to the Allied Forces.
Story Vivienne.png
Vivienne
"What?"
Story Rouen.png
Rouen
"Vivienne..."
Story Vivienne.png
Vivienne
"I know what you all mean. I can see that if we stay here and fight, we're going to be jittery, and you're right that it's important to get the word out. But...!"
Both Rouen and Paddington remained downcast and silent. They knew we no longer have a choice.
Then Orleans spoke, as if it were a matter of fact.
Story Orleans.png
Orleans
"What's there to hesitate about? Let's us abandon the base and withdraw with all the soldiers. Is there any other way?"
Story Paddington.png
Paddington
"It would be best if we could, but it is difficult to get through this Mist with so many wounded."
Story Vivienne.png
Vivienne
"And would the soldiers even accept it? It seemed like they would rather die than turn their backs on the enemy."
Orleans turned her gaze quickly upwards.
Story Orleans.png
Orleans
"--Yes, I know what you mean, La Pucelle. Now is the time to choose to believe rather than to give up."
After speaking to herself, Orleans faced the soldiers.
The Saint's Guidance.jpg
Orleans
"Everyone, let's all leave this base together."
But none of the soldiers wanted to respond. Everyone has already given up.
Orleans
"Hold your heads high!"
The place fell silent.
Orleans
"A base is nothing without its soldiers, right? An army is nothing without its people, right? Who can denigrate you with the fact that you will only be defeated once for every hundred victories you will bring in the future?"
Orleans
"The Saint of the Mist will not accept such a thing. I believe that the courage to live with the regrets of today is many times more precious than the courage to die."
At the mention of the words 'Saint of the Mist', there is a stir amongst the soldiers. It is the name of a mage who saved Verforet a long time ago. And for the soldiers present, Orleans is the Saint of the Mist who offered her helping hand.
Orleans
"If someone is injured and cannot walk, I will heal them with my magic until they can walk. If you still cannot make it, I will carry you on my back."
Orleans
"Listen to the guiding voice in you, telling you what is the right thing to do now. If you cannot hear it, then trust my voice, just for now. You will survive to fight."
Cheers erupted everywhere. Some stood up, some on crutches, others on each other's shoulders. Each and every soldier chose the courage to live, they said.
Orleans' words moved the hearts of the soldiers who had sunk into despair.
Rouen
"That's my savior Dame Orléans! Your great speech is full of Sacred Holy Power!"
Orleans
"Non, it was neither La Pucelle's power nor mine. It was because I believe that from this point onwards, Monsieur Conductor will make sure we all get out of here alive, and that belief was conveyed to all of you."
Vivienne
"So the question now, is how do we break through this siege?"
Story Paddington.png
Paddington
"That's the thing, but I suppose maybe the Mist Monster is attracted to this."
Paddington held out the same hideous statue that came out of the Mist Monster's corpse on the road earlier.
Story Vivienne.png
Vivienne
"Where did you find that?"
Story Paddington.png
Paddington
"It was there at the back of the warehouse. A soldier on patrol picked it up in the forest about ten days ago."
Conductor
Ten days ago...? This coincides with the timing of the localised Mist and the isolation of this forward base.
Conductor
There is no proof anywhere that this statue attracts Mist, and by extension, Mist Monsters. What are these statues in the first place?
Story Vivienne.png
Vivienne
"Let's destroy it... If Paddington's hypothesis is correct, destroying the statue might reduce the Mist surrounding the base. If not, the presence of that ugly statue goes against my aesthetics anyway."
I nodded obviously as Paddington looked up at me.
*--CRACK*
The statue fell to the ground and shattered into pieces, disappearing into Mist.
Story Rouen.png
Rouen
"I'll head out to scout. I'll try to find a place where the siege is a little thinner, whether or not this will thin the Mist."
Story Orleans.png
Orleans
"Then we'll leave after waiting for Rouen's report. We are all here to save the world."
The soldiers roared out their war cries. Thus began our operation to force through the Mist surrounding the forward base.
