The universe of Mist Train Girls consists of 5 factions:

  • The Country of Peace and Iridescent Clouds - St. Iris
  • The Country of Divine Beasts and Sorcery- Nishiki
  • The Country of Eternal Snow and Steel - Eisengrad
  • The Country of Green Forests and Magic - Verforet
  • The Country of Scorching Sand and Blue Oceans - Flamarine

These five countries are what make up Iriscloud and have been covered in a thick mist. The mist spreads from the World Tree which borders all 5 countries. And this was no ordinary mist. It swallowed people whole, led them astray and was full of monsters. The strength of iridescent clouds will return and the Mist will clear. Believing in the divine message passed down by the Divine Children of the Goddess of the Clouds Iris, the 5 countries gathered together their wisdom and technology to create a magical train that is able to travel through the Mist, the Mist Train.

Others

Resistance

The Resistance is originally a loose multinational coalition of members opposing the Mistism Cultists, and the Special Steel Squad (SSS), separated into various subfactions and each led by a very powerful executive. The organization's agents are numerous, hiding in all five countries for espionage and information gathering.

The Resistance was founded by Ricardo Trevithick, the former Divine Child of St. Iris. Lower-ranked Resistance members wear black uniforms marked with a light blue "X". Executive outfits are more customized, but are similarly marked with a white or light blue "X" in their outfits.

The Resistance's main goal is to maintain the status quo of the Phantom Mist, stating that the Special Steel Squads' blind and uncontrolled removal of Phantom Mist does more harm than it is good. The Resistance are seen as hostile enemies to both the Mistism cult and the SSS. While they do not view all Phantom Mist as friendly and beneficial as the former, they do not view all Phantom Mist as hostile either, as in the latter. As such, should an executive feels the Phantom Mist and its inhabitants are able to disrupt the SSS's actions without jeopardizing themselves, the Resistance will not hesitate to use them to their advantage, despite being enemies.

While all individuals share the same primary objective, each individual executive of the Resistance have their own motives for doing so. As the Resistance is a loose, decentralized coalition, each group can work independently without another Resistance subfaction's assistance and can still resume operations even if another faction is dismantled. Because of this, the Resistance has been dismantled into several subfactions right after their leader has gone insane towards the end of Arc 1, with the extremist faction becoming prominent from Arc 2 onwards.

By Arc 3, it was revealed that Youko has slowly and successfully hijacked the Resistance under her control, and the new objective is to destroy Iris Cloud to save her home world of Eris Grand.

Doggan Gang

The Doggan Gang is a minor antagonist faction consisting of its leader, Dr. Gloria and her two sidekicks Whisper and Bright. While the faction appears at first to have an insurmountable number of members, it is in reality a three-person faction supported by a lot of simple-minded robot goons following simple orders.

Despite Dr. Gloria's claims to take over the world and defeat the SSS, the Doggan Gang is not seen as a legitimate threat by the Eisengrad Central Army and instead treated as mostly a nuisance, as opposed to the dangerous operations by the Resistance. However, Bright and Whisper is shown to be a very formidable duo when it comes to combat, pairing well with Dr. Gloria's intellect.

One of the Resistance subfactions has hired them to perform espionage on the SSS, and Dr. Gloria is able to make a working copy of the Mist Train after just one visit to the Mist Train's interior by convincing the conductor to let Dr. Gloria have a peek inside the Mist Train during the Eisengrad festival.
