Trivia

  • Susukino's birthday is the opening date of Susukino Station in 1971. The Sapporo tram (streetcar) stop of the same name above ground is older, having opened on 12 August 1918.
  • Susukino's beast motif is the Ezo chipmunk, a subspecies or local population of the Siberian chipmunk; it is found in what was once known as Ezo, namely Hokkaidō, Japan, and Sakhalin and the Southern Kuriles, Russia.
  • Susukino's sister-in-law is Abashiri from Nishiki, both serving as prison wardens of their respective universe. The closest prison to Susukino in Japan is the Sapporo prison.
  • Susukino's crime and sin theme is based on the Susukino red-light district. It is one of the major red-light districts in Japan along with Kabukichō, Tokyo, and Nakasu, Fukuoka.
  • The building in the background of [Innocently Immoral] may resemble the Tanuki Koji Shopping Street, but it is actually the interior of the old Abashiri Prison - the Ezo chipmink on the roof's metal bar parodies Yoshie Shiratori, the only known person in the world who has escaped Abashiri Prison. This background choice also references Susukino's relationship with Abashiri.
  • [Gentle Prison Warden]'s attire directly mirrors Abashiri's [Merciless Prison] outfit.

Susukino station entrance.

Susukino Station (すすきの駅) is a railway station in Chūō-ku, Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan. The station is numbered "N08". Tt is located on the Namboku Line and Sapporo Streetcar. The station is located relatively close to Hōsui-Susukino Station on the Tōhō Line, but the two stations are not connected and there are no free transfers between the two stations. On the south side of the station is located the largest red-light district north of Tokyo, Susukino, in which are concentrated many restaurants, bars, hotels, and adult-entertainment establishments.

Opened on 16 December 1971, the station was established with the opening of the Kita 24-jo Station - Makomanai Station link. The station did not undergo much changes until November 2003, that the elevator between the ticket gate and the ground level is put into service. On 2004 the lift is extended to between the underground platform and the ticket gate. At the same time, an escalator was installed at the entrance in front of Robinson (now Lafira). Major renovation work begin in 2005 - The clock tower in the centre of Susukino Crossing, located directly above the underground station, is removed. Two platform floor lifts put into service on 15 March. On 20 November 2008, the northern ticket gate, platform connecting stairs and escalators were put into service and eventually movable platform railings on 25 October 2012.

Susukino station platform.

The station consists of two double-lane relative platforms on the second basement level. There are three ticket gates, one on the south side of the basement floor and one on the north side, east and west, with an elevator on the south side and an escalator on the north side. There are four exits, of which Exit 4 has an elevator, escalator and disabled toilet. Several underground malls and tunnels (Pole Town, Chi-Ca-Ho, APiA, paseo and the North Gate Underground Walkway) connect this station to Odori Station, Sapporo Station, and Sapporo L Plaza. These extend approximately 2km from north to south and are the longest underground passageways in Japan in a straight line. Odori Station is also connected to Bus Centre Mae Station on the Tozai Line via the Aurora Town underground mall and the 500m Museum.

The only transport links with this station are with the Nishi 4-chome, Tanukikoji Shopping Street and Susukino stops of the Sapporo City Tram, and not with the above four stations directly connected by underground passageways, or with Hosui-Susukino Station on the Toho Line. Toyosui-Susukino Station is a separate station from the Namboku Line and is not connected to the underground walkway, although it is possible to transfer to and from the tram. All ticket gates at this station are compatible with the SAPICA IC card. Wikipedia

Susukino Hachimangū.

Tanuki Koji (狸小路商店街) is the shopping district in Susukino, Sapporo, Hokkaido. Known to be the oldest in Hokkaido, it is an approximately 1km-long arcade with around 200 shops that runs east to west in downtown Sapporo. The roofed arcade starts at Nishi-1-chome and ends at Nishi-7-chome. It can be used regardless of the weather. The arcade was developed during the frontier period.

In 1869, When the Meiji government established the Hokkaido Development Commission in Sapporo, merchant houses and restaurants began to pop up in what is known today the Tanukikoji 2 and 3-chome areas. In 1873, the neighborhood became known as "Tanukikoji." Over time the arcade, which many tourists visit, features both old and new shops, souvenir shops, and karaoke bars. The arcade architecture was constructed to shield shoppers from weather elements.

There are various theories as to the name "Tanukikoji". One of them according to an 1891 article in the Sapporo Business Journal (札幌繁昌記), "Tanukikoji is a nickname for the alley between Minami Nijo and Sanjo on the west side of the Sosegawa River where women offer prostitution services to customers late at night, all dressed up in their own costumes to attract attention. They think they are going to build a safe in Hokkaido, and they are so proud of their hometown that they come all the way from there to torment the big boys and make them hit the bottom of their wallets. They are even better than tanukis in their deceptive ways, hence the name 'Tanuki Alley'". Wikipedia
