Trivia

  • Tendou's birthday is the opening date of Tendō Station in 1901.
  • Tendou's animal motif is the Japanese macaque, also known as a snow monkey. This species of monkeys can be seen around hot springs, which are common in the region of Tendou.
  • Tendou's main theme is her interest in koma calligraphy (art for shougi pieces), which is famous in Tendo City, as the world's highest quality artwork for koma is found exclusively here. The city is also well-known for the Ningen Shogi, or human Japanese chess, a yearly spring tradition, held annually and is participated by the locals representing living chess pieces. Tendou station itself and the nearby buildings are all themed after shougi pieces.
  • Her sakura theme takes from the many cherry blossoms in real life Tendou.
  • Her liking for sake, japanese rice wine, references one of Tendou city's well known alcoholic products - sakurazake, also known as cherry blossom wine.
  • The Iris Cloud version of Tonbokiri (トンボキリ) is Tendou's legendary spear. The real life counterpart spear (蜻蛉切) was once wielded by Honda Tadakatsu, one of the great generals of Tokugawa Ieyasu. It was forged by Masazane, a disciple of Muramasa. It is now owned by a private individual and lent to the Sano Art Museum for its collection. The type of blade shape is sasaho yari.

Tendou Station entrance.

Tendō Station (天童駅) is a station on the East Japan Railway Company (JR East) Ōu Line, located in Tendo City, Yamagata Prefecture. This station is a stop for the Yamagata Shinkansen, which is a mini-shinkansen that runs on the Ōu Line.

The station is an elevated station with one side platform and one island platform, serving three tracks. The station has a Midori no Madoguchi staffed ticket office. Tendō Station opened on 23 August 1901. The station was absorbed into the JR East network upon the privatization of JNR on 1 April 1987. A new station building was completed in September 1992. The Yamagata Shinkansen began operations from 4 December 1999.

Tendou Station interior.

Most of central Tendo is structured in a grid-like pattern with straight streets running north - south, crossing streets running east - west. Ekimae-dori, the city's main street, runs from JR Tendo Station eastwards to Tendo Onsen on the other end of the inner city. So, the city is arranged like a chessboard, in a way, or rather a shogi board.

During the Edo period, the area of present-day Tendō was part of Tendō Domain, a 20,000 koku feudal domain under the Tokugawa shogunate controlled by the Oda clan, who ruled from 1831 to 1871. After the start of the Meiji period, the area organized as Tendō Village under Higashimurayama District, Yamagata Prefecture in 1878. It was elevated to town status on April 27, 1892 and became a city on October 1, 1958.

There are traditional shopping streets and residential areas at the east exit, but recently, construction of condominiums is progressing, and the population around the station is increasing. In addition, the west exit had a rural landscape a long time ago, but new housing is lined up due to population growth. Wikipedia

Human shougi on Mt. Maizuru.

The economy of Tendō is based on seasonal tourism, agriculture and wood products. The city is traditionally known for its production of the wooden pieces (koma) used in Japanese chess (shogi), and games of "human shogi" have been played since 1966. The city also has numerous onsen hot springs within its borders. The origin of Shogi piece production dates back to the side jobs of the Tendo clan's samurai warriors. Tendo City has since become the largest shogi piece producing region in Japan.

Shogi piece production in Tendo began in the late Edo period (mid-19th century) during a period when the game of Shogi was rooted among the commoners. As part of financial rehabilitation programs, the Tendo Oda clan encouraged their samurai warriors to make Shogi pieces, on which they wrote Kanji characters with lacquer, creating high-grade pieces. Beginning in the Meiji period (1868), the process was divided into two parts: cutting wood and writing characters with lacquer. When mass production techniques, including the mechanization of cutting wooden pieces and stamped printing ("Oshi-goma"), were first used during the Taisho period (starting in 1912), Tendo became the largest shogi piece production region in Japan. Tendo continues to make a majority of Japan's shogi pieces. Yamagata-Furusato-Kougei
