Trivia

  • Khajuraho's birthday is the India National Maritime day, celebrated since 1964.
  • Khajuraho's design is a homage to the goddess Parvati. Parvati and Shiva are often symbolized by a yoni and a linga respectively. In ancient literature, yoni means womb and place of gestation, the yoni-linga metaphor represents origin, source or regenerative power. The linga-yoni icon is widespread and represents the interdependence and union of feminine and masculine energies in recreation and regeneration of all life. In some depictions, Parvati and Shiva are shown in various forms of sexual union.
  • Khajuraho's unrestrained and frenzied sexuality may be referencing shakti - celebration of sexuality for the purpose of controlling sexual power, which is a characteristic of Tantrism.
  • Khajuraho ordering Jeran to be her chair in Beast Frozen Chocolate is a reference to the goddess Durga and her tiger mount, a major Hindu goddess, worshipped as a principal aspect of the mother goddess Mahadevi. She is one of the most popular and widely revered Hindu deities. She is associated with protection, strength, motherhood, destruction and wars. According to the sect of Shaivism in Hinduism, Durga and Parvati are considered the same.

Khajuraho Group of Monuments.

The Khajuraho Group of Monuments are a group of Hindu and Jain temples in Chhatarpur district, Madhya Pradesh, India, about 175 kilometres southeast of Jhansi. They are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The temples are famous for their nagara-style architectural symbolism and a few erotic sculptures.

Most Khajuraho temples were built between 885 AD and 1000 AD by the Chandela dynasty. Historical records note that the Khajuraho temple site had 85 temples by the 12th century, spread over 20 square kilometers. Of these, only about 25 temples have survived, spread over six square kilometers. Of the surviving temples, the Kandariya Mahadeva Temple is decorated with a profusion of sculptures with intricate details, symbolism and expressiveness of ancient Indian art. The temple complex was forgotten and overgrown by the jungle until 1838 when Captain T.S. Burt, a British engineer, visited the complex and reported his findings in the Journal of the Asiatic Society of Bengal.

When these monuments were built, the boys in the place lived in hermitages, by being brahmcharis (bachelor) until they attained manhood and these sculptures helped them to learn about the worldly role of 'householder'. The Khajuraho group of temples were built together but were dedicated to two religions, Hinduism and Jainism, suggesting a tradition of acceptance and respect for diverse religious views among Hindus and Jains in the region.
