Trivia

  • Acapulco's birthday is the coronation of Emperor Agustín de Iturbide in 1822, forming the short-lived First Mexican Empire. His reign lasted less than a year, but Mexico owes its name to Iturbide, as well as his design of the flag of Mexico, still used today.
  • Acapulco is Puerto Rico's younger sister. Both sisters are politicians; Acapulco serves as the brains of the duo, as her frail and small body size isn't convincing to the public, while Puerto Rico serves as charismatic figure for the public, easily able to sway the public, though lacking in intellect.
  • Both Acapulco and Puerto Rico have Mermaid Blood heritage, allowing them to breathe and speak underwater. However, the drawback is that people with Mermaid Blood must rehydrate often compared to normal human beings. This dehydration slows down on colder climates.
  • Acapulco's mermaid and aquatic design is likely inspired from "Tarzan and the Mermaids" (1948) and "Fun in Acapulco" (1963). Both movies are shot in La Quebrada, Acapulco, Mexico.
  • Puerto Rico calls Acapulco "Aca-chan", which is also a pun for "my baby" in Japanese, aside from the shortening of her name.
  • The cocktail in the illustration of [Slumbering Mermaid] is likely the Acapulco, a cocktail made with tequila, rum, pineapple juice, and grapefruit juice. The drink itself references Mexico's tequila origin, and Mexico is also a primary producer of rum, pineapple and grapefruit.

The Interoceanic Railway of Mexico (Ferrocarril Interoceánico de México) was one of the primary pre-nationalization railways of Mexico. Incorporated in Great Britain in 1888 to complete an unfinished project and compete with the Mexican Railway, it completed a 3 ft (914 mm) narrow gauge main line from Mexico City to Veracruz in 1891. Branches included Mexico City to Puente de Ixtla (the constructed part of an incomplete line to Acapulco). Wikipedia

Veracruz train station

The Inter-Oceanic Railway (Ferrocarril Interoceanico) was granted a concession to run from Veracruz to Acapulco on the Pacific coast in 1878 and finally opened a line from Veracruz as far as Mexico City in 1891. However, the Sierra Madre del Sur posed insurmountable technical difficulties to reach the Acapulco port from Veracruz due to the mountainous terrain proving unfeasible to terraform economically-wise, and thus the project was abandoned. The railway was described by the professor and journalist Carlos Barrios Martínez as "the train that never reached the sea". In 1969, the Interoceanic Railroad served one last time, before being slowly abandoned and dismantled.

By the early 1990s, Mexico was experiencing a railroad problem similar to that in other major countries in Latin America. It was not very productive and had a deficit of more than half a billion US dollars annually. As such, the federal government sold-off the rail system to private investors for freight transport, who didn't see much profit in the huge investment required to modernize the passenger rail system which had been neglected for many years. Nowadays, the main public transport in Acapulco is handled by private bus systems, called "peseros". A portion of the former Interoceanic and a station have been preserved as a heritage railway and museum in Cuautla. TheReaderWiki

La Quebrada.

La Quebrada is one of the most famous tourist attractions in Acapulco, Mexico. Due to the orography of the port, intense heat was concentrated causing diseases in the population such as cholera and scurvy, so the doctor of the Spanish Crown, Francisco Javier Balmis, proposed a project to open a channel in the area that would allow air the center of the city, calling it “Abra de San Nicolás”. In 1799 the works began, but it was left unfinished due to lack of financial resources.

It was until 1876 when Colonel José María Lopetegui continued with the works to open a gap that would serve as ventilation for the port. The soldiers under his command removed several thousand cubic meters of rock, a task that is described as heroic for the purpose that was pursued in favor of the population. But again the work was suspended; the lack of resources slowed down progress in difficult terrain, the arduous work was stopped, remaining as it is known and hence the name: "La Quebrada".

Acapulco cliff diving was regularly featured on weekend sports television programming in the United States during the 1960s and 1970s when the USA High Diving Team competed with the La Quebrada Cliff Divers annually during the Acapulco Christmas Festival. The 2002 Guinness Book of World Records lists this as "the highest regularly performed headfirst dives" in the world. Wikipedia
