A mysterious sniper had been sniping at us from long range from inside the factory. We moved forward, taking cover between collapsed buildings to get within range of the enemy, and came to the factory, which was our initial target. |
However, we still cannot effectively strike said sniper. |
The enemy repeatedly dodged from our grasp with its skillful positioning, and retreated just as much as we advanced, and it intermittently launched attacks. Notably, its performance improved markedly after we entered the factory. Perhaps the enemy is familiar with this factory. |
But Pittsburgh and Fayette were not to be outdone. Their experience and sense of danger had enabled us to march on without a single man missing. |
Fayette |
"The attacks have stopped here. Have you noticed that we are being led to a more obvious position?" |
Pittsburgh |
"They thought it had successfully baited us, but as expected, we found out." |
Fayette |
"That's a good job for being ahead of us. Zero casualties on our end." |
Fayette |
"Thanks to you, Pittsburgh, you still have a good eye. You're a former first class shooter. You may not be able to shoot anymore, but you still have a good eye for observation." |
Putra |
"Huh? Pittsburgh used to be a gunslinger? Now she's more of a melee style girl." |
Fayette |
"Yeah. She used to be a better shot than me. She doesn't shoot on the battlefield anymore for a number of reasons, but she's still as good a marksman on the training ground as any of those younger nuggets." |
Pittsburgh |
"Don't play me up in front of them youngsters will ya? These kids don't know me that well unlike ya." |
Fayette |
"That's fine. I'm not hiding anything from them." |
Queensway |
"Yes, Miss Fayette is just telling the truth. Pittsburgh's shooting skills are well known within the Order. She's a mechanic, yet she gets top scores in a trial run." |
Yakutsk |
"No wonder you have a good eye. You immediately identified the gun the enemy was holding and kept trying to determine the sniper's position based on the geographical situation and wind direction. That's usually Fayette's job, she's the shooter." |
Fayette |
"That would be when I was solo. Not if I was accompanied by an excellent spotter." |
Pittsburgh |
"I'm a mechanic. Not a spotter. Sides, it worked because I was in an environment where I could concentrate on observation. It wasn't just me. It's thanks to all the people who are doing the exposure." |
Pittsburgh |
"But I feel this is all working too well. Chasing snipers inside a Phantom Mist is usually far more difficult." |
Pittsburgh |
"Fayette, you've noticed that too, right? Even since we went on the offensive, the number of Mist Monsters has dropped dramatically. Almost as if the sources of the Phantom Mist are being destroyed one by one, don't you think?" |
Queensway |
"Don't tell me that's done by those strong Machine Soldiers in the factory?" |
Fayette |
"Then there's nothing to worry about. It's not the machines that are beating up the Phantom Mist, it's the Out-Siders. They must have seen the situation and turned to support us." |
Queensway |
"But the Out-Siders are probably in the back, treating Miss Detroit..." |
Fayette |
"The Out-Siders are all over the battlefield, by Detroit's side and by ours." |
Pittsburgh |
"So the Attack Team is in serious mode." |
Yakutsk |
"I think it's a flexible response, but it's too deft. Are you saying that the Out-Siders were expecting this?" |
Fayette |
"No, of course not. They're all decisions made 'on-the-fly'." |
Yakutsk |
"What a bunch of superhumans, this would make even the Spetsgruppa Alfa surprised." |
Fayette |
"Each team leader has the right to make decisions on the spot. I guess they decided that covering for us was the closest they could get to a successful operation." |
Fayette |
"It means that the Out-Siders have recognised Pittsburgh's capabilities." |
Pittsburgh |
"I think that's a bit of an oversell." |
Fayette |
"Ya severely underestimate yourself. Ya have to aware that you're a specialist. You're going to join the Out-Siders one day." |
Pittsburgh |
"Don't tell me about it. I'll just do my job properly and everything will be fine." |
Pittsburgh |
"I'm your support. Ya do the shooting. Am I right?" |
Fayette |
"......" |
Fayette |
"Nah, I don't think so." |
Pittsburgh |
"Right?" |
Queensway |
"But isn't it too quiet by the way?" |
Yakutsk |
"That's because, you know, if anyone snipes in a place like this, they'll be spotted immediately." |
Queensway |
"No, while I mean the snipers as well, I'm talking about those Machine Soldiers. I thought it was strange we're nearly at the residential zone and there's still nothing on the way." |
Fayette |
"Fair enough, you could say that." |
Queensway |
"They were radiating such strong magic power, but there are no signs of them. Our presence must have already been detected by the enemy. If we are the target of an attack, they should be nearby." |
Yakutsk |
"You say you don't sense any signs, because they're machines, no surprise that there's no signs." |
Yoshino |
"Not signs, but sounds." |
Pittsburgh |
"Yep. The little fox is right." |
Pittsburgh |
"If there are so many mechanical dolls, there should be some kind of noise. Yet I can't hear even the faintest drive noise in such a quiet factory. Well, if they can become invisible, muffle their magic power, smell and sound, then I'm out of luck." |
Vivienne |
"That's possible, considering the first time we were attacked, non? I didn't notice it at all then, and neither did Yoshino." |
Pittsburgh |
"If they were that capable, I think they would have attacked us more aggressively. The enemy is an army of Machine Soldiers with full-blown intent to kill. And yet, so far nothing else except for Mist Monsters and that sniper showed up." |
Fayette |
"Maybe that sniper wasn't just a mook to buy time, but a trap to lure us here." |
Yakutsk |
"If that's the case, isn't it too late to make a move? I think they had plenty of chances to attack us." |
Fayette |
"Hmm, I suppose that's true." |
Conductor |
...How about we think of it this way? Those machine soldiers 'are gauging the SSS's strength'. |
Fayette |
"You mean they know what we're capable of and they're being cautious? That they're acting tactically, keeping an eye on the situation?" |
Conductor |
That's what I mean. The enemy understands how strong our forces are. The first raid demonstrated to them that we are no pushovers. |
Conductor |
We have survived two enemy attacks in a single battle. Our strength must be well understood to them. Not just Detroit on the front line, but also Fayette's shots would have proved very troublesome. |
Yakutsk |
"Meaning they have the ability to learn." |
Conductor |
Not only that, but they have high analytical skills. They don't attack Mist Monsters. They muffle their magic power to approach us during surprise attacks. This must not be something they learnt from their combat experience with us. |
Yakutsk |
"To say that machines think..." |
Pittsburgh |
"Machines are not so simple as people think they are." |
Vivienne |
"We need to be on the lookout for traps and ambushes. Like in the fight the other day, it's better to assume they are human." |
Fayette |
"We'll be more cautious than ever, everyone. Especially since the Out-Siders' support shouldn't reach us from here onwards." |
Yoshino |
"......" |
Pittsburgh |
"What's up, little fox? Something on your mind?" |
Yoshino |
"Know that the Machine Soldiers are very good. But how can they be so smart, and that sniper just keep shooting at us by itself?" |
Yoshino |
"It wasn't that good a sniper, right? It knows what Pittsburgh and Fayette are capable of, so why did that sniper continue to resist?"" |
Yoshino |
"Yoshino and friends drove that sniper in the way they wanted, didn't they? Isn't that, from the enemy's point of view, a desperate attempt? So why did they shoot so hard?" |
Pittsburgh |
"Sure, you could say that. This is where Fayette and I got here on purpose. We didn't come here on its invitation..." |
Yoshino |
"The sniper never gave up, even after so many failed attempts. It's not smart or bad, it's not machine-like." |
Pittsburgh |
"Not machine-like, so if it's not a machine, what is it?" |
Yoshino |
"What is it?" |
Pittsburgh |
"Isn't there a difference between a machine and a Machine Soldier?" |
Yoshino |
"So that sniper is a machine that sides with the Machine Soldiers?" |
Pittsburgh |
"Huh?" |
Yoshino |
"That strong one is a 'Machine Soldier' and the sniper is a 'machine'. If you divide them like that, that's what it means. But that's not what Yoshino is trying to say." |
Pittsburgh |
"Uh... let's see..." |
Pittsburgh |
"Ya really are a hard person to talk to." |
Yoshino |
"Yep. Even Yoshino has no idea what it means." |
Putra |
"Hey, everyone, come here for a second!" |
Fayette |
"What have you found?" |
Putra |
"Yeah, I found something very bad." |
Yakutsk |
"This is a Machine Soldier...!" |
Yakutsk |
"...Looks like one, but it's not working." |
Yoshino |
"It's completely stopped functioning." |
Putra |
"Will it suddenly start moving for some reason? Will it start rampaging if it was injected with magic power?" |
Yoshino |
"......" |
Yoshino |
"Don't think so." |
Putra |
"Eh? Really?" |
Fayette |
"How can you be so sure? You never know what can happen to a machine that runs on mist stones." |
Yoshino |
"Even Yoshino knows that. But this machine is different from the Machine Soldiers Yoshino and friends fought." |
Fayette |
"?" |
Yoshino |
"This machine does not use mist stones. It does not incorporate any other stones or parts that could be used as fuel." |
Yoshino |
"To put it bluntly, this is just a doll made of iron." |
Putra |
"What do you mean by a doll made of iron?" |
Yoshino |
"It means exactly what it means. A doll made of iron. Iron in the shape of a person." |
Putra |
"Does it mean that there is someone controlling it, someone like Miyako or Shimoamazu?" |
Yoshino |
"Given the strength of those big machine soldiers, don't think so. And those machine soldiers were powered by mist stones. Under all these circumstances, Yoshino concludes that they are completely different." |
Pittsburgh |
"Yoshino, please let me have a look too." |
Yoshino |
"Douzo douzo." |
Pittsburgh |
"Hmm..." |
Pittsburgh |
"...I don't see any evidence of destruction. Did it simply just rust away here?" |
--protect... this...... to....... d...... |
Pittsburgh |
"Hmm? Did anyone just hear a faint voice?" |
Fayette |
"No. Nothing ringing in my ears." |
Yakutsk |
"I didn't hear anything either. Of course, no one else is talking." |
-I will protect you even if it costs me my life... |
Pittsburgh |
"No, I definitely heard it. 'Iw ill protect you even if it costs me my life', very clearly." |
Queensway |
"I knew there were survivors. They must have escaped into this factory and are holed up somewhere." |
Fayette |
"Too early to assume that. It is possible that they are not survivors but enemies. It's more likely that way." |
Queensway |
"......ah." |
Queensway |
"......" |
Queensway |
"......Yes, that's right, Fayette is right." |
Queensway |
"But it's also too early to assume it's a trap. That won't save what can be saved." |
Fayette |
"Queensway..." |
Queensway |
"I understand what you are saying, Miss Fayette. If it is a machine with a high level of thinking ability, it might be able to make such a voice." |
Queensway |
"But as well as being a potential trap, it must also be equally likely to be a survivor." |
Queensway |
"What if the survivors have the strength to fight? What if there were people who were willing to fight to the end to protect this factory and this village?" |
Fayette |
"......" |
Queensway |
"Aren't there people like that in northern St. Iris? These are people who would survive in such a harsh land without the assistance of the Order, correct?" |
Queensway |
"There is nowhere to run to for help. They have no weapons. There are people who still call this danger zone their home knowing this. I don't think those people would abandon this village and run away." |
Queensway |
"You know, there might be people like Miss Detroit. There are even civilians who are prepared to go into the Mist to protect their friends and homeland. There could be people who continue to fight here, waiting for reinforcements from the Order." |
Queensway |
"Am I wrong? Whatever I have said just now, am I saying anything wrong?" |
Fayette |
"...No, you're not wrong." |
Fayette |
"Surely you're right, it could go either way. Be it's a good outcome or a bad outcome that awaits us, there are still all possibilities. That's what fighting Phantom Mist is all about." |
Fayette |
"So I'm not going to tell you to ignore the voices either. But we shouldn't be too cautious about it. I just want people to understand this." |
Fayette |
"Do you understand, Queensway? Look me in the eye and answer me." |
Queensway |
"I understand. Be cautious of possible traps. Even if we hear screams, we will not recklessly dash out on our own." |
Fayette |
"Good reply. You seem to be 'thinking' properly this time." |
Fayette |
"Right, I'll check around the factory. However, never move alone. We'll move via maximizing the best chance of survivors." |
Queensway |
"Yes!" |
Fayette |
"You're telling me this despite being a city-bred young lady, you tell me. You've never even been to the North, not even on a field trip." |
