Northwestern Eisengrad. There is a gigantic 'wall' over there, called the 'Valentz Ice Walls'. |
Eisengrad is said to get colder the further you get from the centre of the country. To the south, near the Giant Tree of St. Iris, there are danger zones such as the Loren Citadel and Sakhalin, which are in essentially off limits to civilians. |
--But this is not limited to the south. Such danger zones naturally exist to the North as well. |
The most famous danger zone in the north is the Ancient Lake Baikal. And then... There are these huge Walls scattered across a wide area. |
Of these Walls, the Valentz Ice Walls are the ones that the Eisengrad Army have been particularly focused on investigating. |
Yakutsk |
"The Valentz Ice Walls are literally a wall of ice. It looks like a man-made structure, but unlike the Loren Citadel, there are no records or evidence that the people of Eisengrad ever built it." |
Vivienne |
"But it is hard to believe that it is a naturally occurring ice wall. That Wall is coated with very strong magic. I think it its more a 'construction' made of snow, ice and magic." |
Vivienne |
"Rumour has it that it expunges Mist on a whim." |
Yakutsk |
"Not rumours, 'findings'." |
Vivienne |
"In that case, it's all true." |
Yakutsk |
"Yes, all the horror stories about the Valentz Ice Walls are true. Countless Eisengradian soldiers have perished." |
Yakutsk |
"There is also not that much Mist. There are several routes to the top of the Wall. The ascent is hard but the descent is easy. It doesn't sound like such a scary place just from hearing all this..." |
Vivienne |
"Yet this is one of the most dangerous places in Eisengrad. So much so that the Northern Army abandoned the survey." |
Vivienne |
"Beyond this Wall, the mountains and tundra of Valentz stretch out. It is an undeveloped area where the Eisengrad army, which has already established bases and strongholds all over the country, still cannot dispatch troops over..." |
Yakutsk |
"It has long been a goal of the Northern Army to establish bases beyond this Wall - If they can control the northern part of Valentz, we will be one step closer to Giant Tree of Eisengrad." |
Vivienne |
"Nevertheless, the Eisengrad Army gave up conquering this Wall. Should you look down on Valentz from the top of the Wall, all you can see is darkness climbing up the Wall from the other side." |
Yakutsk |
"Vivienne, I'm surprised you know this much. I didn't even tell you that much." |
Vivienne |
"I know someone who fought with the Eisengrad Army on the Northern Front. I think she knows Orleans and Pennsylvania too." |
Yakutsk |
"Makes sense, because all the Eisengradian soldiers on the Northern Front in Verforet are all scary people. I wouldn't be surprised if some of them know about the Wall." |
Vivienne |
"What about your 'teacher', does she know much about the Valentz Ice Walls?" |
Yakutsk |
"Of course. I don't even know much about it. I think she'd climbed here more times than anyone else in the Northern Army." |
Vivienne |
"Then we can't get lost just by going out to check the route. And on the beginner's route too, which the Eisengrad Army says is the safest." |
Yakutsk |
"Can't get lost..." |
Yakutsk |
"We can't get lost. It shouldn't take that long just to see what the scaffolding is like." |
Yakutsk |
"Even if something happened up there, I don't see anything unusual from what I can observe from here. If anything has happened, it would probably come from the cracks on the sides." |
Yakutsk |
"The surface of the Wall has been investigated, but not its interior. If a Mist outbreak happens and we're trapped, then..." |
Vivienne |
"Captain Yakutsk." |
Yakutsk |
"Wh-What's that all of a sudden?" |
Vivienne |
"You're leaking anxiety and impatience. If you can't hide it, let it out while you still can. While you're still alone with me." |
Yakutsk |
"Ah......" |
Yakutsk |
"Yes, you're right, Vivienne. I'm sorry. I'm the one who has to be the most firm." |
Vivienne |
"I would like you to say 'Thanks' here. Not only did I save your dignity as the operations captain, but also the lives of your friends who are about to climb that Wall." |
Vivienne |
"For if you have any doubts, this mission will fail." |
Yakutsk |
"If we 'fail' in Valentz, someone's life will end here. That's the kind of place this is." |
Yakutsk |
"I was thinking of a different place with Valentz in front of me. I have to be firm, for the sake of our Instructor Khabarovsk." |
Vivienne |
"Don't get me wrong, oui? It is all of us who have to be strong. We are not so incompetent that you alone can do the work of all of us." |
Yakutsk |
"I know. I'm not going to go off on my own unlike a certain someone else." |
Vivienne |
"Even that somebody is a lot more mature these days, she'd convinced that Fayette from St. Iris." |
Queensway |
"Miss Yakutsk, Miss Vivienne." |
Vivienne |
"My, speak of the devil." |
Queensway |
"The second team has now completed their safety inspections. They are going to take the route to Fort IV as planned." |
Yakutsk |
"Roger that. Let's all continue up the Wall. As Conductor said, our first priority is to rescue Instructor Khabarovsk. Our primary objective, the investigation of the Wall, is an afterthought for now." |
Queensway |
"Of course. Once we find Miss Khabarovsk, we will come back here." |
Vivienne |
"Even if we don't 'find' her, we can still come back here. If there is a risk of secondary distress, or if we decide that we can't turn back before nightfall, we'll go back to the Mist Train, even if we're empty-handed... Isn't that right? Operations captain?" |
Yakutsk |
"Dah, that's correct. Case by case, we will turn back to the Northern Army base. People aren't used to fighting while climbing walls." |
Queensway |
"We don't want to avoid unnecessary fighting. I hope the current calmness stays as is..." |
Vivienne |
"We won't know if it's quiet or not until we go up there. Conditions at the Wall are changeable and hard to see. Let's try not to be distracted from the beginning to the end." |
Vivienne |
"...Eh, that's what Yakutsk said." |
Yakutsk |
"......" |
Vivienne |
"Well, it includes my opinion somewhat. More or less." |
Vivienne |
"Look Yakutsk, I'm going to join the rest. Check everyone's equipment again. And inspect our ranks carefully." |
Yakutsk |
"Instructor Khabarovsk has climbed all these routes alone. She must have also experienced observation missions from the top. And yet she can't even reach the scaffolding of Fort IV..." |
Yakutsk |
"...Perhaps it's better not to climb." |
Yakutsk |
"Perhaps it's beyond the level we can manage when Instructor Khabarovsk didn't come back." |
Yakutsk |
"...No, wrong. The conditions are different to begin with. Neither I nor Instructor Khabarovsk are in the Northern Army now, but of the Allied SSS. We have Conductor on our side." |
Vivienne |
"Yakutsk, why don't you leave it at that? If I have to keep following you up, I'll be the operations captain instead then." |
Yakutsk |
"I know! I'm coming!" |
